I must confess I was largely influenced by a book that I read called "Social Principles and the Democratic State" by Allen and Unwin," says author Paul O'Hara when asked what inspired him to publish his newest book. That and his insatiable desire to learn and contribute to society sowed the seed for 'Liberty, Justice and the State." In this comprehensive and accessible treatise, O'Hara outlines the people, events and forces that shaped the social and political institutions of Australia, and how and why they are evolving to meet contemporary needs.

O'Hara believes that politics play a vital role in resolving conflicts by means of peace and seeking a sphere in which there is some common or general accord - art of compromise, conciliation and negotiation rather than brute or naked force where it concerns meaningful and effective decision-making. O'Hara also explores justice and its relation to virtue, system of deserts, and nature and artifice. He delves into rights and duties, civil law, moral imperatives versus legal restraints, the limits of majority rule, law and liberty, slavery, the spirit of democracy, international law, and many other issues worth serious consideration.

In "Liberty, Justice and the State," O'Hara has written a comprehensive study and exploration of the important aspects of civilisation. It will help readers understand deeper the complexity of politics and human relations, the government, political supremacy and civic engagement.

"I believe the book is different because it attempts to incorporate moral and psychological aspects. My approach to politics is largely normative, not descriptive. That is, I want to know how men 'should be ruled' and not how they are 'in fact' ruled," adds O'Hara.
