TOOWOOMBA, Australia

Australia boasts one of the oldest surviving cultures in modern society. While the beauty of the outback is filled with incredible people and stories, it can also be dangerous and unpredictable.

Author and grey nomad Lainey May is very familiar with harsh climates, nature and the Australian wilderness. She has lived in the Australian outback for more than 20 years and continues to find inspiration and little known history from the bygone eras.

Inspired by having lived on the property central to her story, Lainey has written her first novella, "Even the Land Cries!", which is based on true events in the 1860s. This historical fiction follows two brothers journeying to and building up their designated property in the outback and the battles they faced with the isolation, brutal power of nature and an unexpected cultural divide.

"My book examines responses and behaviors motivating two cultures, and I attempt the non-judgment of either culture," Lainey said. "I wanted to tell this exciting, heart-rending story that has had an uncanny influence on the land where the events occurred."

This book is a short, distinctive look at the country's lesser-known history, explaining events that shaped the country to what it is today. Containing an intriguing fantasy twist, "Even the Land Cries!" combines Lainey's personal touch with a look at the country's lesser-known history, helping to explain events that shaped modern day Australia.

"Aboriginal culture and Australian history are delicately interwoven throughout the novella," Lainey said. "Fantasy is woven throughout the historic facts that were passed on to me."
