The dire consequences of war is all across-the-board. That is, it does not only limit itself to the blood-spattered battlefields but affects innocent families whose kith and kin suffer the appalling trauma commonly known today as posttraumatic stress disorder. In his debut book titled "The Dragon," decorated Vietnam War veteran Kirk E. Shipley discloses his personal story of living with PTSD for 46 years - 38 of which were undiagnosed.

It is worth mentioning that many of those affected by PTSD are often left undetected while others deny the existence of this psychological illness despite the obvious manifestations of the disorder. Such circumstances deprive individuals from addressing the crux of the problem as they go about living their lives rather dysfunctional and withdrawn from society, even to their own family. Taking this into utmost consideration, Shipley shares his life experience from combat to home, unveiling the manifold challenges stemming from PTSD in the hopes of helping others wade through the dim, self-destructive roads it subjects the afflicted.

From Colorado, Japan, Vietnam and back, this essential and extremely helpful book bares the both actual and inner wars fought by the author. Delivered in a detailed manner, without rendering the text lackluster, it reveals the definitive signs and symptoms of PTSD and how it poses a threat to corrode one's ties with friends and family. The behavioral, psychological and cognitive warning signs are laid down straightforwardly while providing crucial information for professional help and assistance if need be.

Shipley's invaluable contribution for anyone directly or indirectly dealing with PTSD, "The Dragon" provides a hopeful perspective of trauma through increasing awareness of the interpersonal and intrapersonal bearings of this condition.
