Many literary books, aided with the encompassing power of the media, has succeeded in painting a typical portrait of a serial killer: ordinary and seemingly harmless with a dark hidden past, typically a childhood issue. In his newly-released fiction "Thinning the Herd" (published by Xlibris) author Kevin J. Ryan leans away from the stereotype to create a gripping narrative that aims to show readers the varied masks of a murderer.

A local detective moves to the suburban police force to get away from the brutal crime scene seen by him as a Philadelphia homicide detective. Shortly after his arrival, there occurs a series of seemingly unrelated murders in the quiet middle-class township. Unbeknownst to the detective, there is a serial murderer afoot, who is both clever and brutal in his attacks. Four murders go unsolved followed by the death of an earlier victim who survived the attack initially. As the detective believes he is closing in, he is badly injured when a truck, laying in wait for him, crashes into his car on his way home from work sidelining him from the pursuit. Is the predator finished, or has he just begun?

Suffused with interesting characters, short chapters and riveting twists, "Thinning the Herd" is an overall spellbinding thriller that presents a new perspective on serial murders.

"Thinning the Herd brings out the concept that there are more serial killers and more serial murders than law enforcement is willing to admit," says Ryan. "More often than not, they do not follow the traditional patterns that the FBI profilers want us to believe."

This murder mystery set in an unsuspecting suburban community demonstrates a scenario where the murderer matches the wits of local enforcement, something akin to the most notorious serial murder stories of history that continue to interest many to this day.
