COLLEYVILLE, Texas

As a young child, author Julie Z. Roth used to beg her parents to take her to an orphanage or leave her on someone else's doorstep. She so desperately wanted to escape the abuse and poverty of her home, and as her father refused to educate her, she felt as if she would never leave.

The abuse, however, was not enough to keep Roth down. She grew up to be the most successful of all her siblings and learned to live her life on her own terms. Roth's new memoir, "Orphan in the Storm" (published by WestBow Press), chronicles her rags-to-riches story and shares a powerful message of faith and determination.

At the age of 41, Roth's father passed away, leaving her mother alone, pregnant and with five other children. They lived in a half-built house with no indoor plumbing and no source of income. Roth's family looked to God to answer their prayers and guide them along, and she says he gave them miracle after miracle in order to survive.

Despite her father's wishes, Roth did attend school and eventually earned a Ph.D. from Vision International University. "Orphan in the Storm" depicts her transition from a timid, young girl to a strong, independent woman and showcases how God influenced her even when she tried to reject him.

Through her book and by speaking on its topics, Roth hopes to inspire other victims of abuse and encourage them to keep fighting.
