BEND, Ore.

"Walking Away From The Land" (published by Xlibris) is Jonathan Stewart's firsthand account of his 3,100-mile trek the length of the Continental Divide Trail. From the Mexican border to the Canadian Rockies, he takes readers on an incredible odyssey while shedding light on the dramatic climatic and ecological changes taking place at the crest of the North American Continent.

"Walking Away From The Land" details the natural, historical and cultural landscape of the cultural Divide Trail while highlighting the personal challenges and fascinating people he met over three summers while hiking this national scenic trail. Stewart uses his personal history as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal and as an Oregon forester to underline the dangers climate change presents to an increasingly urbanized society. This book is more than a personal account of a transformative journey through one mountainous region; it is a wake-up call to the rapid collapse of natural systems worldwide.

"The unintended consequences of the cultural and climatic changes taking place are challenging the survival of our forests, grasslands, native wildlife, and our very own civilization," Stewart says, "I hope this book gives an understanding of the dramatic impacts of global warming and a keen interest in taking personal responsibility for our actions."
