Jo Paroz Releases New Memoir on REMEMBERING AFRICA

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.

W. Somerset Maugham wrote, "I have an idea that some men are born out of their due place. Accident has cast them amid certain surroundings, but they have always a nostalgia for a home they know not." Jo Paroz embraces this nostalgia in her memoir, "Remembering Africa: Moments in Time" (published by Trafford Publishing).

After 30 years of working in New Mexico, Paroz felt that she needed a change. She wanted to explore a place where she could live out her dreams of adventure. When she decided to move to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city, the response from friends and co-workers was pretty much the same: "Where?" Paroz saw an opportunity for change and to escape the mundane and took a teaching position with the International School of Tanganyika.

"Remembering Africa" began as Paroz's own journal, which she kept through the duration of her two years in Africa. After returning to the United States, she continued to think of Africa and realized she needed to share her story.

An excerpt from "Remembering Africa":

"The plane was now somewhere over Northern Africa, scheduled to arrive in Dar at 5:00 A.M. A new life awaited me. I had only myself to begin with. I wondered how I would fare. One of the things the CEOs had tried to discover at the interviews was whether we could handle being in a new culture without the support of old friends and family. I spent a lot of time thinking on that, about being in a situation where I'd have no history with anyone. There would be some hard times. Although I knew I could be alone with myself, I also looked forward to developing new friendships with people from other cultures around the world. I wanted to learn, grow, teach, travel, enjoy, and, hopefully, give something back to this Dark Continent, my new home."
