Featuring stories from 10 veterans of the United States military and some of their spouses, the new book "The Wounds of the Soul: PTSD in Lives of Veterans and their Families" (published by iUniverse) by author Jim Money paints a vivid portrait of what it means to live with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Money is no stranger to PTSD or its effects. As an Army veteran who spent 15 years in service of his country, he fell prey to the effects of trauma. This book is his attempt to "take the symptoms of PTSD out of the textbook and put them into narratives so that they are easier to recognize."

"There are still tens of thousands of Vietnam veterans hiding in the grips of PTSD and moral injury," Money says. "This number is being added to, on a daily basis, by veterans from the Gulf War through Afghanistan. Also, millions of individuals throughout society are being exposed to traumatic events."

In an effort to help veterans and civilians alike cope with the effects of stressful and traumatic experiences, Money's new book offers true-life accounts of those who currently have PTSD and how they've learned to cope with the disorder.

"The disorder of PTSD is life-changing and needs to be taken seriously," Money says. "Everyone needs to be watchful of their loved ones or friends, who are also susceptible to the disorder. They must not be ashamed and they must seek immediate help."

Jim Money served almost 15 years in the United States Army. He received a Purple Heart and is now classified as 100 percent disabled. Money collaborated with 17 fellow Vietnam veterans in writing his previous book, "The Conflict that Was a War: In Vietnam and at Home." Now retired, he lives in Tow, Texas.
