Jim Hammond Releases NEW CHINA

Seattle, WA

According to the New York Times, China's Communist Party announced a corruption investigation of Zhou Yongkang, the former chief of domestic security, following his detainment. It is another recent scandal in a wave of concerns about corrupt officials. Perhaps the illusion of social progress, questions arise as to whether many of these investigations are in the interest of leadership integrity or merely a way of thinning the competition for political power.

"China is walking a line between modernization and the oppression of its people," said author Jim Hammond. "Their opaque government is trying to sustain growth, but putting the tools essential to developing a middle class out of the citizens' reach."

In his book "The New China," Hammond recounts the 18 months he spent in China while researching the country. During his stay, Hammond was witness to corruption, oppression and extortion directed at Chinese citizens by officials and Party members.

Hammond's years of research concerning Chinese economics, history and politics help give western minds an insight into the country. His chilling personal testimony and interviews from Chinese citizens paint a surreal picture of cronyistic business dealings, greed, lies, censorship and paranoia.

In a mix of humor and horror, his individual story-intertwined with research and interviews-helps to paint the picture of a land little understood by the average westerner.
