E. Michael Abel returns to the literary scene after his widely acclaimed first novel "Flushed Out!: A Novel of International Crime and Intrigue." His latest quasi-sequel novel, "Scarpelli" offers a riveting look at the enmeshed complexities of the criminal underworld. It is at once smart, cunning and fast-paced. Although just recently published, one reader from the United Kingdom admitted she "could not put it down."

In this gritty tale about the transporting of cocaine from Bogotá, Colombia to New York then further on to Boston, Massachusetts, and how the head of the New York crime family, Carmine Angelo Scarpelli uses the blackmailed Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee to front the operation, readers will come to understand the interrelationships between men - both as criminals and on a personal level. Through the lives of Scarpelli and Jack Finch, now head of the DEA Manhattan Division, a partnership out of necessity is formed in order for them to solve mutual problems: both have informants within their organizations.

Abel provides the readers access to the minds and feelings of the central characters - both Scarpelli and Finch. Through an intensely descriptive and "dialogue" literary style, the readers are immediately placed into the action and alongside the characters; giving the readers a firsthand experience of "a fly on the wall" approach. Much more than a crime novel, it relates the humanistic complexity of Don Carmine Scarpelli as a ruthless crime boss yet at the same time a tormented widower and loving, protective father and grandfather.

"Although society is plagued with illegal drugs and supports the 'war on drugs,' 'Scarpelli' is intended to move the reader beyond Don Scarpelli not as a stereotypical crime boss but as a human being," Abel says. "A truly unique approach."
