When first-time space shuttle astronaut Chris Cole is grounded after an accident, he decides to attend a nearby medieval fair and finds himself in a world where he can change his destiny in author Dudley Mecum's debut novel, "A Sojourn Among the Avatars of Wisdom" (published by iUniverse). The author is embarking on a marketing campaign to promote the book.

In the novel, Chris is on a quest to become a knight. As his quest unfolds, Chris faces enemies and foes that use him as a pawn to settle old scores. In an effort to overcome his enemies, Chris seeks advice from a cast of unexpected characters who dispense timeless wisdom.

Having experienced numerous setbacks in life, Mecum felt the need to provide a cohesive and entertaining medium for attaining useful principles in an effort to give hope to those who have also endured failure and adversity in their lives.

Mecum explains that the book is "quadruple-use" because it serves to entertain, impart wisdom by including the sages' quotes, employs various literary devices - such as symbolism, irony and foreshadowing - and pays tribute to Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School, a mid-19th century art movement, by giving the protagonist his last name.
