Daniel Habib Writes About Giant Reptiles in Mesozoic Era

Daniel Habib was inspired to write a book about dinosaurs, mammals, birds and pterosaurs due to the fact that there was an episode of natural history in the world which was dominated by giant reptiles on land, in the sea and in the air. It was a completely different time than that of today. He believes that it is an important topic in science, an important story that must be told.

It was a unique period, never to be repeated once mammals became the dominant tetrapods. Birds and mammals first appeared as well, but remained insignificant until these reptiles were already extinct.

The approach is holistic because it describes relevant concepts within the geosciences, including how fossils record the history of life and how radioactive decay provides numerical ages of this history. Also, it describes the significant influence of mass extinctions and of the plate tectonic rearrangement of the continents on life during the Age of Reptiles.

About the Author
Daniel Habib is a paleontologist who is interested in paleobotany and palynology with a specialization in dinoflagellate fossils. He obtained the PhD from The Pennsylvania State University in 1965, and since then he has been a professor at Queens College of the City University of New York. He retired in 2007. He has obtained most of what he knows about dinosaurs by reading the articles published in respectable journals as Science and Nature, and in technical journals specializing in the subject. He is a member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology and attends its annual meetings. He also attends meetings of the Linnean Society (eastern section) and monthly meeting of the New York Paleontological Society where he is a member. He has attended lectures and classes given at annual meetings of the Geological Society of America. He enjoys the American Museum of Natural History for its excellent specimens on display.
