Intertwining the lives of two Jewish women living 700 years apart, author Brigitte Goldstein's new novel, "Dina's Lost Tribe: A Novel" (published by iUniverse), blends fact and fiction to create a unique historical novel.

Obsessed with finding her mythical birthplace in the Pyrenean Mountains, an American historian stumbles upon an isolated mountaintop utopia arrested in time. What she finds is not only love, but also a mysterious codex written in Hebrew letters. Enlisting the help of two fellow scholars she deciphers the writing, which opens up the passionate world of a medieval Jewess living in the 14th century at the time of the expulsion of the Jews from France.

"The overall theme of the book is the timelessness of the struggle for freedom of the individual caught in the web of oppressive historical forces beyond their control," Goldstein says.

"Dina's Lost Tribe" contrasts the lives of modern and medieval characters in a tale of love, betrayal and redemption within a broad spectrum of Jewish history. Goldstein says her book provides a treat for history buffs: though the characters are fictional, the story's backdrop reflects the author's meticulous original research. She also drew on the history of the Cathars, a heretical Christian sect persecuted at the same time. The author's imagination was also fed by a wide variety of historical and biblical texts as well as films like "The Return of Martin Guerre."

About the Author
Brigitte Goldstein earned a doctorate in European history from New York University. She taught history and worked in publishing before turning to writing full-time. Besides "Dina's Lost Tribe," she is the author of three additional historical novels, most recently the award-winning historical mystery "Death of a Diva: From Berlin to Broadway."
