Author James R. Mapp tells the story of "Chance or Circumstance?: A Memoir and Journey through the Struggle for Civil Rights" (published by iUniverse) from an insider's perspective, giving an account of people, places and events in Chattanooga, Tennessee, during the 1960s civil rights era. He reveals significant historical events that influenced the fight for equality in civil rights, education and employment.

Mapp's purpose for the book was to provide a written record so important people, places and events would not be forgotten. He wanted to instill racial pride by revealing the hard work involved in the struggle for civil rights. Mapp felt an obligation to share the struggle so young and old alike would appreciate the history of the 1960s civil rights struggle and understand the significance.

Mapp passed away in 2015, before seeing publication of this book, which was his life's work. He shares what motivated him and others to sacrifice income, endure hardship and even risk their lives to overcome the oppression of African Americans since the days of slavery.
