BREVARD, N.C. -

Pastors spread the news of Christ in a variety of ways, but one of the most prominent is on their church signs, a visible reminder that allows them to share their beliefs with all who pass by. A pair of photographers is documenting this aspect of Americana, creating a legacy with their new book of photos before hand-lettered signs permanently give way to electronic signs. Although the new types of signs impart the same messages, they do so without the same soul.

In trying to capture these images, the photographers traveled interstates, highways and back roads, crossing Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, North Carolina, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. Along the way they found signs by the roadside quoting scripture and displaying cleverly worded phrases and reminders about the importance of faith and a purposeful life. Practical warnings also can be found, such as a Methodist church sign in Asheville, N.C., which had this to say: "Honk if you love Jesus. Text while driving if you want to meet him." A Baptist church in Carnesville, Ga., proclaims, "God is the potter not Harry."

"Soul Sold Signs of the South" features such turns of phrase as this sign from a Presbyterian church in Nashville: "Patience carries a lot of 'wait.' " A Baptist church in Kosciusko, Miss., offers this saying: "Without the bread of life, we are toast." A more sobering sign from another Baptist church in that same town reads, "Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees." Some signs aim to inspire, such as this one on U.S. 441 between Bishop and Eatonton, Ga.: "Feed your faith & your doubts will starve to death" and this one from Acton, Tenn.: "There's no expiration date for spiritual food."

Photographers and writers Bucky Jones and Eloise Veal constantly look for ideas to present to the public in picture book form, traveling widely to accomplish this goal. They live near Brevard, N.C., a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. They are already working on other books to preserve Americana.
