Today's teachers know that students must be highly proficient at recognizing, examining, and explaining flawed logic to meet Common Core State Standards and other college and career readiness standards. To answer the call for a resource focused on teaching these skills, Learning Sciences International has released Examining Reasoning: Classroom Techniques to Help Students Produce and Defend Claims.

In this research-based book, part of the Marzano Center Essentials for Achieving Rigor education series, authors Robert J. Marzano and Tracy L. Ocasio explore seven specific techniques for teaching students how to examine reasoning. The authors provide specific recommendations for teaching students how to state claims, support claims with evidence, and identify flawed logic, with the ultimate goal of deepening students' understanding of content and increasing student achievement.

"To succeed with standards, 21st-century learners must be able to recognize when logic is flawed-and to explain why," says Robert Clouse, president of the Learning Sciences publishing division. "Now there's an entire book that provides classroom examples and easy-to-follow guidance on teaching this skill. We're thrilled to be bringing this important and practical resource to educators."

Based on Dr. Marzano's earlier work, Examining Reasoning: Classroom Techniques to Help Students Produce and Defend Claims introduces the research foundation and provides practical classroom examples and non-examples to model the techniques. It includes tips for using verbal cueing, dramatic instruction, storytelling, and visual representation to increase students' ability to examine reasoning. It also explores modifications and adaptations to help educators meet the needs of various student populations.
