Boardroom IQ advisor Dennis Carey, in conjunction with co-authors, Ram Charan and Michael Useem, today announced the release of the book Boards That Lead: When to Take Charge, When to Partner, and When to Stay Out of the Way, which explores how the role of the corporate board is changing in today's business climate. Published by Harvard Business Review Press, the book serves as a guide to help take advantage of board oversight while avoiding common pitfalls.

Boardroom veterans Carey, Charan, and Useem have this to say to today's leaders: "Chief executives must run the corporation, but directors must also lead the corporation on the most crucial issues. Monitoring and governance matters, but the time has come to rebalance the responsibilities of the board. Directors need to know when to take charge, when to partner, and when to get out of the way."

Readers have expressed great enthusiasm for the book, and to encourage ongoing dialogue, the authors have set up a free discussion forum on BoardroomIQ.com to let contributors add their own prescriptions, principles, anecdotes or questions about leading a boardroom. Interested parties may also take advantage of a free chapter download in the Thought Leadership section of the site.

"This is a wise and comprehensive book," says Harvey Schachter of The Globe and Mail, in his review of the work. "The authors know boardrooms, and share a lot of what they have seen outside the public eye. They are particularly strong in setting out the role and activities of a lead director. And each section of the book includes a short checklist for directors to follow, compiled at the end into what they call 'The Complete Director's Checklists'."
