Cranston, R.I.

Author Bernadette Conte's interest in her ancestral history began when she was a child and witnessed the many trials, struggles and stories of the Itrani immigrants of Cranston, Rhode Island. Itri, Italy, has been home of the Maria Santissima della Civita, the patron saint of the town for generations. Conte has attended St. Mary's church in Cranston since childhood, practiced their traditions and honors a replica of the Madonna della Civita. Through the years, her mother, who emigrated from Itri, Italy, gave her spiritual books and documents with a command to scrivi e ricorda ("write and remember").

In 1975 at the request of her pastor Reverend Andrew Farina, Bernadette Conte began her research on the Maria Santissima della Civita and the eternal bond of the Itrani immigrants with their homeland of Itri, Italy. Faith in their Madonna prompted her to write their story so that all generations of the Itrani people will remember the legacy left to them.

"Eviva Maria Madonna della Civita", a profound story resounding with truth and revelation, sweeps through centuries of history and generational faith to the Madonna. This moving account of history explores the difficult but enduring ties between the sister cities of Itri and Cranston, R. I., the deep faith, sacrifices, determination and fortitude of the Itrani immigrants; and the pattern of emotions that repeat themselves through generations that gives them a renewed awakening to their past and a burning desire to renew their faith to the Madonna.

Readers who wanted to connect and rediscover their ancestral past will find "Eviva Maria Madonna della Civita" a striking read that leaves an indelible cord in their hearts. "I wanted our children and future generations to know the deep struggles, faith, and perseverance that our parents, grandparents and ancestors experienced for us to be educated in our faith and to have a church in which we could worship in freely without being persecuted because of our nationality or inability to communicate in the language of this country, as many other immigrants must have experienced when they arrived in America from their homelands," says the author.
