A self-proclaimed pop culturist, John Milner loves a good book accompanied by a great tune.

For many baby boomers, pop art and music played a vital role in forming social consciousness throughout the '60s and '70s. A boomer himself, Milner sets out to travel to the beat of this still developing phenomenon.

The author recently released "Benson's House," a book that aims to entertain while instructing on the incredible implications art and music have had in shaping our American social structure.

Readers will follow one family through five generations, each with their own genres. The stories of their lives unfold through post-impressionism, jazz, flappers and bootleg whiskey, "The New Masses," folk music, beatniks and disciples of rock 'n' roll.

"I believe the advancement of American popular art and music from 1863 - 1965 provided affirmations to the voice of the people," Milner said. "Along that time line we find contemporary styles in eras that demonstrated defiant expressions that gave rise to the masses' defense of freedom and equality for the common man."

Even those who are not enthralled by music or literature may be drawn to "Benson's House" if they are marked with a strong conscience for equal rights and social justice.
