Author Anastasia Shmaryan uses a story of crime and adventure to show the lasting bond of love between all creatures in her new novel, ""://The Crow's Cry" (published by Trafford Publishing).

Set in present-day Detroit and Pittsburgh, "The Crow's Cry" chronicles the friendship between Robert Lipinski, a lonely teenager, and a magpie named Gale. After the two meet in an attic, Robert quickly realizes that Gale is no ordinary magpie - the bird can actually understand what humans say. The two find a life of crime and robbery that spans more than a decade.

As Robert grows up, his relationship with Gale is a constant in a world of uncertainty. Shmaryan weaves a fast-paced detective story filled with a wide variety of characters. Some people try to do the right thing, while others turn to a life of crime, but there are no killings and plenty of romance.

"I like to write about ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary situations," Shmaryan writes. "Many of my characters encounter pain and anguish at some stage in their lives. As a reward for their suffering they find true love or something else that completes them as a person. I believe that this is crucial for the climax of my books."

"The Crow's Cry" will be featured at the 2013 Beijing Book Fair's Combined Book Exhibit, held in Beijing Aug. 28 - Sept. 2.
