When first-time space shuttle astronaut Chris Cole is grounded after an accident, he decides to attend a nearby medieval fair and finds himself in a world where he can change his destiny in author Dudley Mecum's debut novel, "A Sojourn Among the Avatars of Wisdom" (published by iUniverse). The author is embarking on a marketing campaign to promote the book.

Shortly after Chris' arrival at the festival, the king deems Chris to be an example of the average man and, unexpectedly, selects him as a contestant in a tournament to become a knight. Villainy, treachery and a crucible await him at every turn. Enemies employ verbal and physical means of persuasion, and others use him as a pawn to settle old scores.

Chris encounters many colorful characters who guide him by dispensing the timeless advice of ancient Greek philosophers and many others, as if it were their own. In "A Sojourn Among the Avatars of Wisdom," Mecum includes quotes from the world's most legendary sages to provide a context for the characters' maxims.

Mecum explains that the book is "quadruple-use" because it serves to entertain, impart wisdom by including the sages' quotes, employ various literary devices - such as symbolism, irony and foreshadowing - and pays tribute to Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School, a mid-19th century art movement, by giving the protagonist his last name.
