I asked this in another thread, but I wish I hadn't because now it's PROPERLY plaguing me. So I've given the question a thread of its own to give it greater prominence. I apologise for the vagueness and incoherence of the question; I promise I made it as clear as I possibly could. XD

So! Y'know that generic stereotypical spooky music? In a minor key, goes Do Mi So Ti Laaa, So Fa Mi Re Do (and probably continues from there, but really, you could repeat that bit over and over and over again). What the hell IS it? Someone must have written it. It may even have a name. But what IS it? What's it called? Who wrote it? How long has it been around?

I did try looking for it on the ebuTuoY so I could let people actually hear it, but... good LORD that was difficult! So we're stuck with just my description, I'm afraid.

SOMEONE in the world must know!!!

Definitely not. I know 'Tubular Bells' (the whole thing XD), and this - I believe - dates waaaaay before it. It's even more obvious and much less nameable. Thanks for trying though. re: What *is* that spooky music?

EDIT: the piece I'm after... it's the kind of thing that you'd get in a cartoon as the heroes creep through a haunted house, or a pianist might play accompanying a pantomime or one of those really cheesy silent movies. You can really vibrato our face off on the "Laaa". Does this... mean anything to anyone? :/

Was it 'Dragonheart'? Films went through a phase a few years ago of using the music from 'Dragonheart' in their trailers, and a HECKUVA lot of 'em used it. I didn't even know I was frustrated at not knowing the music until I finally saw 'Dragonheart' and the relief swept through me. XD

I know what you're talking about, and it has its roots in classical music. It's not "Danse Macabre," but I can't think of what it is at the moment.

Hmmmm...

Wait, that's not remotely what Weez is talking about.

Minor key.
Villain sneaking up on you.
Used in melodrama.

You played a Patrick Doyle score, I believe, Petite.

It took me forever to find Dragonheart. They finally used it on the Oscars as background for a montage and a poster on here recognized it.
Still one of my favorite trailer themes.

Weez, can you think of any trailers this theme is in? I wish i could hear it!!!

Wait, do you mean that low-pitched sort of jangly tune that goes, "Dun-dun-DUN-dun. Dun-dun-dun-DUNNNNN!" Like the stereotypical 'danger noise?' Agh, this is so vague... if this is indeed what you're talking about, I can see why it's hard for you to describe. My sister always sings the words "Draco Malfoy, Draco Malfoy's FAAAACE!" to that tune, but I'm pretty sure that's not the title of the song.

EDIT: This song it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr_oyN-fd60 (Dragnet theme song)

(Haven't posted...ever, really, but I just happened to check the board tonight.)

I'm most likely wrong here, but the first thing I thought of was Edvard Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King." Don't know if it's really all that "spooky," but it's used quite often, and rightfully so. If nothing else it's fun to listen to.

Go 1 min. 45 sec. into this cartoon, and I think this is what Weez means.

It's a variation on this theme.

Ahhh, I got it now. Not like I know the name or anything, but I definitely get what we'd be looking for. This is going to sound silly and juvenile, but I had that effect on one of those Disney sound books when I was four or five. It was 101 Dalmatians and it was the sound for Cruella. (I think.)

The musical score (of the Silly Symphony short) was adapted by Carl Stalling from the Saint-Saëns compostion "Danse Macabre".
