Does anyone know as to why Sara did not re-create her roles as Little Edie (of Act 1) on Brodway's Walter Kerr? I thought she was really good ! and perfect for the Little Edie Role (though she is taller than Christine Ebersole) and I thought she was more believable as Little Edie on Act 1 becoming later as Christine's Little Edie on Act 2 than Erin Davie...
BTW- I seen the show and I LOVE IT !! I would recommend it to everyone .. best show this Season !!!
Christine Ebersole- THE BEST PERFORMANCEof an Actress, I agree !!
From what I understand, it was the way that she portrayed the role. There was nothing in her performance that indicated that she would grow up to be Little Edie in the 2nd act. There was nothing in her performance that even showed any nuance of Christine Ebersole.

I think it is because the powers that be felt Ms. Davie fit better. Nothing against Sara. She is obviously very talented and did a fantastic job at Playwrights Horizons. I read an article in which Erin says she thinks Sara is awsome. Those powers that be also feel they hit a home run with the addition of Erin. The critics seem to echo the same.
Yeah, I thought it was a combination of what DRS said & what PinballWizard said.
I didn't follow the show much until after the Playwright Horizons production closed, so I don't know much for sure, but I remember hearing from someone that Sara Gettelfinger was the only person in the show whose performance wasn't fitting enough for the role. But I also remember hearing about the DRS contract thing, too.
So I don't know which one it is for sure, but I hope she gets cast in something soon! I'm a huge fan.
I haven't seen the Broadway incarnation, so I have no idea how Ms. Davie is. However, I agree with the sentiment about Getelfinger's performance not meshing with Ebersole's later performance. It was a real stretch to believe that Getelfinger's act 1 Edie would become Ebersole's act 2 Edie. In fact, I found it very hard to believe.
i want to stand up for Ms Getelfinger. I saw her twice in GREY GARDENS, & Eri Davie once.
While I think Ms Davie is a better physical match, I felt that Ms Getelfinger was more on target with the voice, inflection & personality.
i didnt think so the first time I saw GREY GARDENS, close to the beginning of the Playwrites Horizons run. In fact, i thought, "what the hell, who is this giraffe?!?!"
but when i went back close to the end of the Playwrites Horizons run, she won my heart, & i saw tremendous growth & development in her portrayal. I absolutley love her on the cast recording!
I am sure Ms Davie will grow into the role, but i felt she didnt she show enough "S-T-A-U-N-C-H" to believably become LE in ACT II. Perhaps this was a choice made by the director.
Also, it seemed that ACT II's LE's accent & inflection came out of nowhere, as Ms Davie didnt seem to even attempt them in ACT I (although this seems like it may have just been the night I saw the show; others have told me that she did when they saw her).
let me close by saying, i cant wait to have another chance to support Sara Getelfinger, & i look forward to seeing how Erin Davie grows in the role (i *know* she has the skills!)
If you read the reviews Gettelfinger got when the show opened off-Broadway you can see that most critics mentoned that she was miscast as Little Edie and that while talented, she just did not provide a nuanced performance especially considering she not only had to act opposite Ebersole but her character was also supposed to become the character that Ms.Ebersole so perfectly portrays in Act II. I believe after the reviews it was clear that if the show transferred, Gettelfinger was to be replaced. Though I did not see her in the role, only heard her on the cast recording, I prefer Davie's voice and found her performance thrilling.
Davie does do the voice though not as thick as Ebersole does it. She does a lighter version of it that is easier on the ears and is probably how Little Edie talked when she was younger. Also, if we're talking inflictions and habits of LIttle Edie, Gettlefinger didn't do any, and in her defense neither did Davie really. They were both rather poised. Though, once again, this isn't a stretch of the imagination as I doubt that Little Edie would have had so many suitors in her younger years if she acted like she does i nthe documentary.

Actually.... You guys are only partly correct. Yes the main reason is basically that she just couldn't act this part. She wasn't working with the character. BUT from what I heard from people who worked on the show. ***INSIDER INFO*** .... It was mainly because Ms.Getelfinger was apparantly a HUGE drama Queen, demanding this and that and pretty much pissing everyone off. I also heard she got into several spats with crew, dressers, and the rest of the cast. She apparantly thought she was hot $#*! Guess in the end she was badly mistaken.

It sounds like Ms. Getelfinger got blamed for problems with the book. There is NO WAY the little Edie of the first act (a boring stock ingenue) could possibly turn into the funny, attention-grabbing, intelligent and eccentric personality she is in the second act.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

She's not in the Broadway company because she wasn't asked to be. It's that simple.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
