Straight from the horses mouth!
So, I went to see Cyndi Lauper in concert last week. For those of you that have never seen her live, you need to try to catch one of her shows sometime…she is AMAZING live. Anyway, Cyndi likes to interact with her audience and likes to tell stories. She often also talks with audience members and at this show someone asked her what happened with Sweeney Todd.
She said that she did audition for Steven Sondheim after he had already promised the role to Patti. She said that she was very happy that Patti got the part because she was originally promised the role and hates the type of “backstabbing” that sometimes goes on for roles. She said that she also thought it was sweet that Steven offered the part to Patti on her Birthday, and what a wonderful present that must have been for her…she was very sweet about the whole thing.
Some people in the audience expressed displeasure that Cyndi didn’t get the role, but then she said, “Don’t worry…I’ve been asked to do something else that is equally as special”. Of course the audience wanted to know what…so she said “I’ve been asked to do Three Penny Opera…I have to see if I can work out the details”.
I wonder if it will end up happening…I sure do hope so!

That is really sweet of Stephen Sondheim! I can just imagine how estatic Patti must have been as she stated many times that playing Mrs. Lovett in the concert version was the greatest night of her professional life.

Wonderful news! I've seen Cyndi in concert twice, and she was divine.
She can act, too. Awards aren't everything, but she did win an Emmy.

this would be pure brilliance. nothing less.
also, wallace shawn has written a new adapted book for this production, so perhaps with a star of cyndi's caliber, her name above the title, and a new book, she could be considered leading... i know, it's a stretch. but that would be karma if lupone and lauper were up for the same award... haha

Posted: 12/22/05 at 4:00pmTwice I went to see Cher in concert and preferred Cyndi. I have seen her 3 times since. She is an amazing performer. What a talent. So many people only know the stuff from the 80's. The stuff she truly shines on what she has done since then. Anyone who doesn't have it should immediately purchase "12 Deadly Cyns." It has the old stuff and the newer stuff. (Then you fall in love and have to get Sisters of Avalon, Shine and The Body Acoustic!) I will bend over backwards to see her on Broadway.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

I agree!! For those of you that are only familiar with her 80's stuff, you really should get "Hat Full of Stars" and "Sisters of Avalon". They are, by far, her best material to date.
