So the Boston Red Sox finally beat the Yankees and go on to win the World Series and the next day their star pitcher starts campaigning against the candidate from Massachusetts? This smells like the work of a certain Mr. Applegate.
Happy Celebration of Democracy, everyone!

Actually, less than 24 hours after saying he supported Bush and that he would go out and campaign on his behalf, Shilling had a change of heart, held another press conference in which he said he regretted having made his political position known at all and cancelled all plans to make any public appearance for or with Bush. Not sure who/what got to him so quickly, but overnight he backtracked like the groundhog seeing his shadow. Perhaps it it was the spectre of a great deal of endorsement $$$$ going up in smoke......

I saw that. It also brought to mind celebrity endorsements in general. I saw Ben Stein on the CBS Sunday News making an endorsement for Bush. Not that I like Ben Stein, but now I will always associate him with that endorsement. Sometimes it's best not to know.

Well, Stein was a speechwriter for Nixon and has been a very outspoken conservative for many years (he and liberal Al Franken have done several friendly debates together over the years that were so successful that someone wanted to market it as a show called "Franken-Stein" .... get it?..... they both declined).

Schilling adores attention, so maybe he was temporarily leery of doing something that might alienate part of his fanbase. But look- if he really believes in Bush, let him endorse the guy. If anyone really changes their vote because a frickin' pitcher (even a reliatively smart one like Schilling) endorses a certain candidate, they have problems.
The Red Sox management asked Shilling not to stump for Bush, so he cancelled his appearance at a Republican rally. However, he hasn't stopped supporting the campaign. In fact, he has recorded a telephone message that will be used to call undecided voters in swing states all day tomorrow. So to balance things out, the Red Sox GM, owners and players attended the Kerry rally in Manchester, NH, Saturday, quipping, "Republicans said that Kerry would not win the presidency until the Red Sox won the World Series. Well, hope is on the way!" The crowd went wild.
Shilling certainly has put a bit of a damper on his appeal up here in Red Sox Nation with his Bush endorsement. Not smaht!
its ok for people to flip flop.. just not the presidential candidate.. he has to be firm and know what he stands for. Presidential candidates should know what they believe and dont believe... and John Kerry has no clue. ***DUCKS***
