Andrew Lloyd Webber's Gold. The other day, it was Les Miz.
"Life is not measured by the number
of breaths we take, but by moments
that take our breath away."
"Life isn't about how to survive the storm,
but how to dance in the rain."
Having read about Sam Mendes as likely director for the movie version of SWEENEY TODD - I have just watched the DVD of the concert version with George Hearn and Patti Lupone.
I've got my MP3's on random... I just heard "You Spin Me Right 'Round" and now it's "That Thing You Do". But there has been alot of ABBA and Celine Dion tossed into the mix tonight as well. Ooo, and Whitney's "Didn't We Almost Have It All".
If Lincoln were alive today, do you think he'd be pleased with his tunnel?
Anyway...I'm currently listening to my downstairs neighbor's young daughter murder scales on the piano at 8:30 on Saturday morning ... if you can call it music.
Speaking of Gypsy, the new revival cast recording will have several bits and pieces never recorded before: the Entr'Acte, Madame Rose's Toreadorables, Small World (reprise) leading into and through the "I'm a pretty girl, Momma!" transition and including all of Gypsy's strips, and the dialogue leading to the final curtain ("Madame Rose...and her daughter, Gypsy!").
It's tough to quibble with the original recording with Merman (though it makes a couple of jarring cuts and changes to the material), but the Lansbury and Daly recordings each have their little quirks and problems that drive me crazy:
Lansbury is great, but her supporting cast isn't, and the tempos are often SLOOOOW. I'm also not certain about some of the keys that Lansbury sang the score in...some songs sound like they are in a very different register. Maybe somewhere here knows?
As well documented, Daly was not in good voice when her Gypsy was recorded, but she has a pretty good supporting cast. They also recorded that album with a monster string section ... along with other additional pieces, and it has always sounded a little TOO grand to me, if such a thing is possible. It starts to veer into symphonic territory.
Anyway, the new one fills in some gaps in the recorded material, and whatever one thinks of Bernadette, she might just end up being the easiest Rose to listen to on record.
I'm anxiously awaiting the Bernadette recording. The Merman recording is ok. It's not my favorite. I only really like her "Everything's Coming Up Roses." The orchestrations in this version seem very boring to me. The Lansbury recording is my favorite. The orchestrations are a lot more lively that Merman's. The Daly version is ok. I love her "Rose's Turn" though. Bette Midler....EEK! I cannot stand her in this recording. The songs, like "Some People" and "Rose's Turn," are so slow and boring. And plus, I don't think she was the best choice for this role. Maybe the music seemed dreery because it was a tv movie. Who knows? But I know I cannot stand this version So all in all, Lansbury's recording is my favorite so far. Her vocals are good and the orchestrations in this version have more...oh I don't know, PIZAZZ!
