Daily Word Game

To the Daily Word Game Editor:

I enjoy playing the daily word game. I've been involved in theatre for many years as an actor, director, music director, producer, stage hand, etc. I think I have a pretty good understanding of theatre-related terms. So, I usually guess the word and, usually, I even understand how it relates to theatre.

But, there are times, like twice this past week, when the words throw me.

A couple of days ago the word was 'foul'. I really cannot imagine how this relates to theatre other than as a word in a title or song.

Today the word was 'mahl stick'. I googled this to find out what it is. I now know what it is but the definition doesn't explain how this is used in the theatre. I guess I just have to use my imagination and think back on all those set build sessions to understand who might use it and how/when it might be used.

I'm probably not alone in not understanding the reference for some words and terms. It would benefit a lot of us, especially those without a lot of experience or a theatre degree, if the game displayed a definition or a link to more information about the word and how it relates to theatre after we solve it (or fail to solve it). This would help many of us expand our theatre knowledge.

I would love to know how many people who played the game on June 1, 2023, guessed the word and how many of those people knew how it relates to theatre without googling.

Full disclosure...I did not guess the word. Further, I googled it. I did not find a single reference to theatre. I can now make a guess at how it might be used in the theatre but it seems pretty obscure.

If the game is intended to befuddle me with words that vaguely, obscurely, relate to theatre, it's working. If there is any intention to add to my knowledge, it's not working, at least for me. It is merely frustrating me.

OK. It just seems like some days you're picking random words. What does the solution to the 6/17/23 puzzle have to do with theatre?
