You know.....or not.  At all.

I would love to see him as Harry MacAfee in Bye Bye Birdie.

Too bad it's on NBC so it won't happen for the live broadcast next year.

I loved, LOVED him as Harry in Company.

(I'd have to think about this, but I just wanted to say I support this debate)

I was at a taping of his show in late March - he takes questions from the audience before taping begins and I asked him if he had any plans to do more musical theater (I also loved him in Company!). Most of the audience just stared at me like I was bonkers - deafening silence and Stephen laughed and said "wow- thank you - I never thought anyone knew I had other abilities!"  Anyway, his response was expectedly appropriate but noncommittal - loves the idea, never says never, but hard to fit into his schedule.

I think he mentioned Jesus Christ Superstar recently on his show. I assume he was thinking King Herod.

He would be great in Bye Bye Birdie.

I think he's aged out of the leading man demographic they seem to be casting for them but I think he would do well in one of these cobbled together standards musicals (An American in Paris, Holiday Inn, Roman Holiday, etc.). I think he has a pleasant voice and you don't need strong vocals if you take more of a Fred Astaire approach that shows off your musicality more than your vocal power.

If Bryan Cranston can't do it Colbert wouldn't be too bad for Jean Shepard the live Christmas Story.

Colbert's specialty is playing high-status idiots or jerks and he has a very 1950s/60s conservative look.

I think he'd be a great Applegate in Damn Yankees, Senex in A Funny Thing Happened, or Biggley in How to Succeed.

Story time: So I went to a taping of Colbert's show about 5 months ago. He did the Q&A before taping started and he called on me. I asked if he's ever thought about doing a Broadway show and what would it be. And right away before he can even say anything, the band started playing the guitar riff from Heaven On Their Minds (Jesus Christ Superstar). And Stephen Colbert breaks into an all-out belt of the song. Motioned right to me when he belts "Jesus!". It was so perfect, it was as if I were a plant and the whole thing was staged.

He'd be a great King Herod, but he would also make a really great Pilate.

I'm thinking if he were younger he might have been an awesome Elder Price.

Some of these ideas are intriguing, but he'd be best with a role that didn't require too much singing if his performance on the Tony Awards this year is any indication.

Colberts a marginal singer and poor actor. you could get away with putting him in a movie musical at best

Other than his name recognition, what does he really bring to a broadway level production vs all of the incredible talent thats out there....

I love Colbert to bits but let's be real, his singing voice is barely serviceable.
