With recent news of Ms. Lansbury dropping out of the Chalk Garden does anyone think that we will see anymore of her on the stage, or will "The Best Man" live to be her last show on Broadway?
I think of so many theatre legends still with us and wonder as they are getting up in age will have one more chance to see them perform in New York.. Julie Andrews? Maggie Smith? Michael Gambon? Ian McKellen?
Even when considering many actors like Patti Lupone, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, Bernadette Peters, Betty Buckley and Elaine Paige are right around that 70 age range.
I still hope for something like a small role in an Encores type production with an engagement limited to a performance or few. (perhaps with earpiece, if needed).
In any event, I count myself lucky to have seen her in the recent Blithe Spirit tour, her small role in The Best Man, and we still enjoy her on cable in Murder She Wrote and many film performances.
There's nothin' like the Dame. Brava, and thank you, Dame Angela.
And I'm sure that if this should be the case, there would still be plenty of opportunities to see her in benefit concerts and such like for example... I really don't think she will ever fully retire.
She is 91. She made a decision being with her family. Family is the most important thing we have. No number of fans or Tonys is going to replace the time she will get with her family. She was in her 80's when she visited Australia . She went on Broadway and West End at that age as well. I am amazed she even did that.
Dame Angela would have been the main selling point of The Chalk Garden revival and it's a huge responsibility and additional stress. That has to be one of the main reason behind her disappointing, but totally understandable decisions.
I wouldn't rule out completely her return in a small supporting role when the success of the show won't depend on her name alone.
From what I understand she wants to spend more time with her family. Her daughter lives in LA. Perhaps, she may consider doing something from there. A limited engagement or something.
I just can't imagine her retiring from acting completely. So here's hoping she will consider a guest starring role on a TV show or will even return to the big screen.
She would have been perfect for the role of Priness Dragomiroff in Murder on the Orient Express remake, but they predictably went with Dame Judi Dench.
I don't know any profession other than show business where people would expect or at least hope someone would continue working into their 90's and be disappointed if they chose not to.
I too would have loved to see her in Murder on the Orient Express. Agatha Christie's eccentric characters are so perfect for strong character actors, as Lansbury has proved in Death on the Nile and The Mirror Crack'd.
I'm glad I got to see her in Blithe Spirit. At her age I'm not surprised that she doesn't want to lead a show anymore though! It would be wonderful if she continues to work in some capacity but she has certainly earned her retirement.
As someone stated earlier, her daughter lives in Los Angeles. She, and her husband, run a great Italian restaurant in West L.A. called Enzo and Angela's. I've eaten there many times (have seen Angela dining off to the side on several occasions. The food is really good, don't let the strip mall location on Wilshire turn you off. Incredibly nice waitstaff, too!
