Hi! I'll be in West End in October and am planning to do the Friday Forty but I understood it's next to impossible (though there's still that small chance!) However, I only have 1 free evening (Thursday evening) and was planning to do the returns queue. Would it be possible to just buy 1 ticket for part 1 (and not part 2) from the returns queue? Or do they require you to buy tickets for both parts? The second part is on Friday evening and I already have a dinner I can't miss that night.
It is not possible to purchase a ticket for just one part only.
Tickets for sale are for both parts and this is reflected in the cost. You may opt to queue and buy for both parts and then not return the following evening, which is your right but in doing so, you may prevent someone who desperately wants to see both parts from seeing it.

The below quote is from the website so you can purchase for just part One on Wednesday matinees and Thursday evenings now. I don't advise seeing part one unless you're going to see part two soon, unless I guess you already read it and know what happens. There's no ending and a lot of cliff hangers at the end of part one.
"If seeing both Parts over consecutive performances does not work for you, you can choose to see Part One on a Thursday evening at 7.30pm and book Part Two on an alternative Friday evening at 7.30pm at a later date. From 21 September, Wednesday matinee and evening performances can also be bought together or separately – please refer to the ‘One Part’ tab below.**"

That's a wonderful update and thank you for highlighting it.
I stopped by the box office and they told me they have 2 types of returns tickets: a return for both performances or a return for one of the performances. Most of the returns they receive are for both performances and if those are the ones returned, then the person in the returns queue have to buy tickets for both parts 1 & 2. In the rare occasion they get a return for only part 1 or only part 2, they will inform the customer and will only require him/her to purchase that part. For the most part, most of their returns are for both parts; but for returns for only 1 performance, they get more part 2 returns than part 1 returns.
So to answer my original question on this thread, it is possible to see only part 1 of Harry Potter.
I also asked if it's possible for me to buy a return ticket for both parts on consecutive days (Thursday and Friday) but return the part 2 ticket. Box office told me that is possible but I would only get a refund if the box office is able to resell the part 2 ticket.
Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who answered my question before this trip. I did manage to buy a ticket from the returns queue (not called the cancellation line here in London) and I sat next to a family who told me they returned the ticket for my seat that same day.
Anyway, one thing that wasn't clear to me before going was pricing. I took a photo of the pricing of return tickets (which is the same prices as face value) and uploaded it online here:
It was quite random when someone from the box office went outside to sell a ticket. There were 3 people in front of me and we all managed to get in. I saw tickets from balcony to premium stalls being offered so again, quite random. Regardless, I hope all of you get to watch this amazing production. Good luck!
