GreasedLightning, I think they're referring to the atmosphere of NWS which is sort of a dungeon. At least to me, that's why I wouldn't pick NWS for The Humans.
OK – I see that as a potential point. But how on earth do shows like Ave. Q and One Funny Mother (and Gazillion Bubble Show for christ sake) work in a dungeon-atmosphere but not The Humans? If anything you would think it would work perfectly there, considering it takes place in a basement apartment...
To piggyback onto what GreasedLightning is saying, I also don't think the larger stages at NWS are all that dissimilar from the Pels, and The Humans certainly didn't feel out of place in that space.
Why would they demote themselves back to off Broadway? Why not transfer to, say, the Belasco, which is currently open and of comparable size to the Schoenfeld?

Because why spend the money to transfer AGAIN to another sought after Broadway house comparable in size that they are currently not filling night to night when they can transfer somewhere smaller and play to full houses every night for smaller cost?
They had their best selling week last week, but remember it was one of the ONLY plays playing on Broadway that period.

There was a mention of it in the original posting of the article with a shoutout to Rudin's moving of and continued success of The Flick last year, but has since been edited or removed as has the title. The link title shows the original title of the article but if you click through you see the title has been since changed.
ETA: Most other articles on the recoupment announcement (Deadline, Variety, etc.) mention the possibility of another move or just a closure. Yet to be determined.
I don't see the comparison of NWS to a dungeon. The Pels is underground and is nowhere near as spacious a facility than New World. I think NWS has a cool industrial feel to it. I think the bottom lime is if people want to see the show, they will go to NWS. Evidently people have no problem going to see Q and The Bubble show. They have been there a long time.
I'm not sure what off-Broadway house could handle it? I mean the set is two stories, so need good site lines. I mean Stage 42 is a great size, and it's only 499 seats. But it does feel larger.

Ave. Q has a double tier set, as did the Off-Broadway RENT revival. And those played at, uh – New World Stages!
Didn't in the recoupment press statement state that the move from the Helen Hayes to the Gerald Schonefeld cost $600k, so a move to a off Broadway house will cost similar again and with smaller box office would take a lot longer to recoup this, if it does.
