The way Jessie freaking Mueller says this on the Waitress cast recording is my favorite thing ever. Seriously. Should have beaten Cynthia.

It's utterly heartbreaking in person. She's fantastic in this role.

I loved all five of the nominated actresses and have no qualms about Cynthia's Tony win. She was fabulous.

I'm seeing it July 10! More excited than I was to see Hamilton for the second time tbh...

I can't tell what this song is saying though? He doesn't seem like a bad person from the song. Or maybe he does. It sounds like he loves her a lot. But it kind of also sounds threatening. I can't tell. Anyone want to elaborate?

It feels much different when it's performed in person. There is a very significant moment of spousal abuse that precedes the song, and one that follows it. So yeah the song illustrates how controlling Earl is and how he exhibits the apology behavior that is common among abusers. In the song he's saying "you will still be mine" in a very possessive tone, not in a loving partnership way. It's actually pretty creepy and disturbing in person and both actors play it very well.

In the beginning of the scene Earl and Jenna fight and he grabs her and is about to hit her hard when she tells him she is pregnant. He flips out but then is happy and sings the song - he also gives her a very creepy ultimatum that you'll see. After the song he grabs her and carries her to the bedroom, which she is not happy about, so there's a clearly implied sexual assault as well. Jessie's face when he carries her off is just crushing.

I agree, Jessie’s two lines in that song are heartbreaking. She’s a phenomenally good actress, and it comes across in her singing too.

As for the Tonys, well, it was a really strong category (with the exception of Philippa Soo). Any of them would’ve deserved to win.

Acknowledging Ms. Mueller's brilliance? Yes. Good. Go for it. She and her performance deserve it.

Rehashing the Tonys and saying she—or anybody else—should have won? No. Stop it. Bad. The point in doing so is so far below zero.

This season was an embarrassment of riches for Leading Actress, why can't we just celebrate that? All of the nominees were brilliant, plus McDonald, Salonga, and Villafane.

Wait....so you haven't SEEN it yet, but from 2 lines on the recording you think she should have won?  I'm not diminishing from her performance, as she is the reason to see the show, but how can you even HAVE an opinion if you haven seen it?  (Have you seen The Color Purple?)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
