Should Shuffle Along started off Broadway . I feel it would have been a much better show. With much better book and scenes. But it was very good though

It's too large for most off-broadway houses. It should have started out of town in February, opened this coming March and used the time between to work on the book.

I would of suggested the theatre they had hairspray in in seattle.

There's no way, logistically, that they could have done a tryout with this cast. Sure, it would have benefited. I think the extended preview period with work breaks was meant to ape a tryout process more than most contemporary preview periods, and they did do a lot of work. It's not perfect, but I love the show.

I definitely think this show would have benefited from an out of town tryout. I saw the second preview (so it was before they made the changes), but what I saw was a complete mess IMO. I pretty much disliked everything about the show except for the outstanding choreography. I have no desire to go back to see this. Even with the changes.

I saw this show early in previews as well and thought it was quite good.

Just curious though….I've seen the phrase "complete mess" used to describe this show on several occasions.  Something I don't agree with personally.

I'm wondering though how many shows, historically, have been nominated for a Tony that were deemed as horrible as some seemed to think this was.
