Knowing that a Broadway show can play up to eight times a week and that it's leading stars are in most of the shows I was just wondering how this takes it's toll on relationships/marriages. For example when you have such a wonderful creator of a show  like Lin from Hamilton who spends six years writing the best show I've seen in years and performs and up to six shows a week in such demanding role how much time is left for quality family time/home life.

So much energy is put into the show and its creation and continued promotion I'm sure one arrives home exhausted. To make a marriage last under such circumstances seems simply incredible. I must give credit to those major Broadway stars that can make their relationships last...... I am wondering if anyone reading this post who is involved in a major Broadway show can give insight as to how the actors make their relationships work outside the theatre. Is there a higher than normal divorce rates for Broadway actors?

John Cullum and Emily Frankel are the most adorable example of a long lasting relationship in the entertainment biz. Their video blogs together are a delight, so much genuine love between them.

Chris & Laura Mann of The Phantom of The Opera tour.Chris started his run in the title role in November 2015 and Laura joined this past October as a swing. They've been married for almost 3 years and I think they've been together for about 10.

Andy jones, the prince in the Cinderella your, is married to the Cinderella understudy(she may be a swing now). This is kind of ironic considering Santino Fontana is married to the Cinderella  understudy from the Broadway company.

OP: Do you mean the strains of a relationship between someone working on Broadway and someone working the usual 9-5:00?

Lin's wife is a scientist and lawyer so I'm sure she's very understanding about the demands of a career.

Yes that is exactly what I mean. If I were married to a Broadway star and work 9-to-5 hours with children it seems like I would never see my spouse as he or she would be arriving home usually after midnight when I'm sleeping and I would be gone the  next morning. Even on weekends with two shows on Saturday and one on Sunday there's hardly any time for quality time together.

how does one make such a relationship work?

Eh I don't think it's THAT demanding. I mean they don't work during the day besides the matinee show right? And when they aren't starring in a show besides when they are auditioning they aren't working at all? I think there are a lot more demanding jobs

You kinda have to ask them....every marriage finds their own way

But I suppose they work with a lot of patience and understanding.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Many non showbiz jobs such as those in the medical field and other emergency services often involve antisocial hours. For many couples I know this actually works for them, where they split the child care by one working 9-5 while the other does evening and weekend shifts.

Its about compromising and discussing what works best for them as a couple I guess.

I think in general, marriages are a lot of work and commitment, and you find your own balance. I'm an ER doc, my hours are insane, I'm glad I'm marrying someone with more "stable" hours. We make it work, just like anyone else. And as someone pointed out, once they're in the show, performers only work a couple of hours a day.

As everyone has said, each couple has to figure out what works for them regardless of job hours. That said, if these couples have kids, it often is helpful with childcare because someone is home most of the time all times of the day and night.

Exactly. For over 20 years, my husband worked Sunday - Thursday evenings at a law firm. I taught during weekday mornings and had my own law firm job: double shifts on Saturday and Sunday.

Fridays were pretty much "sacred". We almost never scheduled anything that kept us apart on that day.

And, too, there were vacations and holidays, etc.

I'm glad we spend more time together now, but I can't say our work schedules were ever a serious threat to our relationship.

I am told, however, that a lot of people engage in "tour affairs", relationships that are understood to be for the duration of the tour only (and are automatically suspended whenever an actual spouse is visiting).

One stage manager told me she couldn't believe how quickly everybody in her bus-and-truck company paired up. And I used to know a number of performers who only had sex outside their marriages when they were out of New York; whether the spouse left behind knew what was going on varied with the couple.

Nothing in this post refers to anyone mentioned above. I know nothing about the stars discussed here or their marriages.
