Pearl consistently broke the fourth wall to make out-of-charcter wise cracks to the audience. One example, when she went onto the passerelle during the title song: "Pearly Mae's gonna take the ramp!" The bar wasn't that high.
Yes it was. She was thrilling in the role. All she did worked for her. I was young but I saw her do it 6 times. And every performance was thrilling. She had a similar kind of quality for me that Tyne Daly had with Rose in her earthy approach. There was a moment where she did brake the wall and the audience ate it up. IT WORKED AND WAS GLORIOUS. . This is just my opinion. And I hope Bette has as much fun with it as she did.
Speaking of Dolly breaking the fourth wall; I understand Jean Stapleton did Dolly in stock. It was a year after All in the Family premiered. She would sing "Wow wow wow fellas, look at the ding bat now, fellas!" and of course the audience at it up.
When Sally Struthers was doing Dolly recently, I was thinking she might sing "Look at the little goil now, fellas!" but I don't think she did.
Love Pearl Bailey. Lets be clear on this. When I go and pay to see this I will be going to go and pay to see Bette Midler in Hello Dolly. Not Hello Dolly starring Bette Midler. I hope she owns the role and has a blast. Walls or no walls.
I also loved Pearl but "grounded" is not how I'd describe her delightful performance which was more a kin to a nightclub routine than a characterization in a Broadway musical. I've seen Bette numerous times and am hoping, this time around, to see Dolly Levi.
