The scheduling is brutal for those of us in the US.
So, who are your early picks? For singles, mine are Djokovic and an upstart on the women's side. I don't sense that Serena is adequately prepared to defend her title nor is she at 100% in terms of fitness.
Sharapova & Serena face each other in the quarters due to Maria's dip in the rankings late last year. Surprisingly, it's Maria who's been the more challenged so far. The winner of their match should have no trouble making it to the championship round, on paper at least.
There's an interesting development in the other half of the women's draw. If the seeds hold up, Vika Azarenka and Madison Keys are en route to a semifinal showdown. If either Vika or Madison gets to that final, look out Serena. Vika knows how to get into Serena's head and Madison makes Serena awfully nervous out there.
Poor Rafael Nadal...he's lost his mojo and the rest of field senses his vulnerability. He has an impressive record to be proud of. If he doesn't acquit himself well in the remaining majors this year, I see him announcing his retirement at the end of year. His self confidence is shattered.
Well my picks were wrong but it still enjoyed the matches including this morning women's final which was quite a surprise since Serena had played so well in other matches.
Congrats to Angelique who played the match of her career to bag the trophy. I love it when an upstart takes out a champion to become champion. I'm a huge Serena fan but it's Angelique Kerber's day. She is the 2016 Australian Open Women's Champion!
Time is also no longer on Serena's side. I'd like to see other players really step it up and challenge her in what could be her last year on tour. I suspect that she'll tie Graff in singles title count at the majors this year. However, the younger players on tour no longer fear Serena and it will be extremely difficult for her (or anyone else on tour) to duplicate her success from last year. It's time for Serena's successor to resolutely stake a claim.
What a men's final. I can't believe I managed to stay up to watch the entire match. In the first set Nole was in beast mode. He was an efficient assassin out there. The improvements to his serve and forehand since last year are astounding which does not bode well for the rest of the tour. He is now hitting his spots on serve and thumping that forehand. Only Nadal can hit through him on clay and Stan on hard courts but only when they are "on". To his credit, Nole has figured out how to blunt their brute force tennis. Right now the guy is without peer in several categories, including mental strength and ability to pace a match.
Congratulations to 2016 Australian Open Men's Champion Novak Djokovic for an emphatic 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 (3) victory to kickoff the season. Best of luck to finalist Andy Murray and wife Kim in the impending birth of their first-born child. Andy's older brother Jamie partnered with Bruno Soares to win the Men's Doubles title so the UK has much to celebrate.

Very true, can see him getting at least another two majors this year.

Feel bad for Murray, has lost 5 Australian Open finals. I am sure the birth of his first child will take the sting out of the loss today. Hope his father in law is doing better.
