Can I has cheezburger with this?

Ha!

For what it's worth, I respect the fact that Emerich made this film which was such a passion project for him. I didn't even realize he was gay until I started reading how he went out and raised the funding for this.

I believe his heart is in the right place. Conversely I can also understand how people who were there and actually participated in the riot are saddened by his "white-washing".

But in the end it's just an Emerich movie. It's not meant to be Ken Burns' Stonewall.

I understand what you're saying and part of me agrees. I am too young to have been there but over time and through contacts and associates have met some persons who I'm told with relative truth were there or at least "near-by"...

Sometimes just seeing things in a BAD light is worse than NO light at all ; we all have had misplaced passions I just wish they had not changed history so drastically like this somehow.

I defended him when people were criticizing the movie without seeing it. Now that the movie is out, he's on his own. And it sounds like he doesn't have the intellect or insight or sophistication to tell this this tory. He's just a hack who applied an old formula to this complicated story--and lacked the talent to pull it off.

I'll go see it, but it sounds like the 1995 Stonewall movie was better. And that wasn't very good.

Hey Roland--go back to disaster movies. Keep your hands off our lives.

The film is a piece of crap and the only good performance in it belongs to Jonny Beauchamp.

Kinda felt like I couldn't keep belittling this movie unless I actually plunked down my shekels and saw it in a theater.

Which is what I did yesterday. And now I feel entitled to belittle it again all over the place. The thing gets me SO ANGRY at points! Ya know that scene in the trailer where Danny throws the first brick in the revolution? Well, it's even worse in the context of the full scene-- Danny has just escaped a scene being pimped out to a J Edgar Hoover type in horrid Dame Edna drag (mixing the movie's 2 favorite villains-- middle-aged male predators, and really trashy drag). He's run back to the Stonewall Inn where he and his friends are kicked out of the bar during yet another raid, to the cheers of a swelling crowd of gays in the street outside, who wait expectantly for something, anything, to explode. So our FICTIONAL hero Danny makes a huge speech to the mute crowd rallying them to fight back-- and Danny looks down to find someone has somehow put a brick in his hand. When Danny throws that brick through the window, he is literally cast as the ring leader for the whole revolt. Talk about revolting!!

Yeah, Jonny Beauchamp is terrific as Puerto Rican street hustler Ray. But that could be because he's surrounded by a lot of actors who seem really uncomfortable to be there, among them Ron Perlman and Jonathan Rhys Myers, who being middle aged, are both cast as unreliable or downright evil characters in the story of gay liberation. (The movie's postscript takes pains to explain how Perlman's real-life character underwent a dramatic about-face later and became a real hero in the gay rights fight down the road.)

What makes me angriest about this film? The fact that in the last reel, the damn thing still made me cry real tears, at the sight of the 1970 Gay Liberation March that turned the 4 days outside Stonewall into the watershed event we know today. And you will be more moved by the postscript outlining the fates of the real-life principals here than anything Roland Emmerich stages in the body of the film. What a wasted opportunity to tell this story without the Hollywood cliches.

The fact that this piece of tripe was written by an openly gay man and directed by an openly gay man is what angers me the most. They should have made it top priority to get this done right and they failed on every conceivable level. INEXCUSABLE! They should be ashamed!

It's at 9% on Rotten Tomatoes.  Hotel Transylvania 2 was better reviewed by a significant margin.

If I had time I'd go see something else and sneak into this after.  Just to laugh at it.

I just want to hear what Jon Robin Baitz has to say for himself for all this.  His name is curiously left out of the backlash.  That Emmerich made a dunderheaded movie shouldn't be a surprise, but I think Baitz deserves more than his share of punishment over this one.

True, true. they both deserve the ridicule and shamefulness for this "Independence Gay"! Misguided passions aside, these are both privileged white men who happen to be gay and still have some kind of problem with self doubt and self hatred or I don't know what? How could they get everything so wrong and think they're telling the truth. This **** makes the "Studio 54" movie look like Citizen Kane.

I never cared a whit about Robbie Baitz's "Travails of a Republican Family in Palm Springs" either. The inevitable trajectory for him is reactionary Mamet-hood.  You know, the whole "White men are the only group it's okay to hate anymore, woe is us."

Yeah, Namo, I was torn between bad choices-- pay good money to see a picture I expected would suck, or diss it without actually seeing the thing at all. I opted for the first choice, unlike most of the folks on this thread, it would seem.

And yes, Jon Robin Baitz deserves equal credit for twisting a potent true-life story into a blond-white-knight-saves-the-unfortunate-nonwhite-underclasses story that Hollywood keeps insisting on making for the most spurious of reasons. As a Jewish white guy who has a thing for blonds, it still depresses me no end.

I hear what you're saying and you definitely earned your place on the higher road by sitting through what we could (almost) all see was going to be an awful movie.  I've never been one to believe that everybody needs to taste every possible poop sandwich variation before being able to say, in an informed manner, that all poop sandwiches are poop.

Yes but to paraphrase Chekhov (or was it Tolstoy?), each poop sandwich tastes poopy in its own unique way.

Has Lena Dunham weighed in (you should excuse)?  I'm sure her dad was at Stonewall.

If I could tell Baitz and Emmerich anything, (other than what a f**ked up job they did on this movie), all I could say is the truth is out there if they had cared enough to even remotely look for it.

There is an African American gay HH bounce performer from New Orleans named Big Freedia. In an interview once, he gave this advice. (I paraphrase, sorry)

"Believe in yourself, Follow your dreams, Be who you are, Be firm in who you are, Never give up..." these things could be said about many things in life but if you are struggling with self doubt or self loathing, truer words have never been spoken. Even more so when you are younger or older and still struggling with your sexuality.

The DeMille of world destruction flicks and a patrician writer whose extent of diversity is sometimes having a Jew around team up to depict Stonewall. How could it have gone right?

Larry was outside of AMC the other day screaming at people going to see EVEREST instead of STONEWALL and throwing PrEP at them.

It woulda made more money if they blowed up more stuff and a meteor hit the Stonewall and it was in 3-D.

I've been talked into seeing this with a friend tonight who is insisting that we must see it to be able to trash it with specificity.  Luckily, he's cute.  Maybe I'll just hatef*ck him after.
