Last week a student of mine, who graduated high school 6 weeks ago, passed away.  No car accident, no illness,  no stupid teenage choices, no drugs, no foul play.  This young person died of natural causes. He just didn't wake up.  How can that be?

Today was the wake, surrounded by students and families for which there was no comfort and no sense. The pain in that room was palpable.  No one was immune, parents, children, students, alum, teachers, jocks, drama kids, robotics team. Trying to be strong was impossible.

Tomorrow we will bury him.  Please hold your loved ones close tonight and every night.  I know I will.

It are events like that, that really slaps you in the face to wake up! All we have is NOW. Now can end in a blink of an eye. Take time to enjoy the world around you, the people in your life. This life is a magnificent gift that we all too often take for granted.

My thoughts are with you and all the his fellow students, teachers , friends and family.

Thank you both for your thoughtful words. Now that the funeral is over, healing can begin, little by little. I saw a number of students last night at a student-produced show and they are so good to each other. They even had an insert to their program remembering him.

And through it all, I remind myself: breathe.

This is a thoughtful post and hope you find out what caused the kids death.  Never stop reminding your kids Drama that drunk and unsafe drivers are the leading cause of their deaths at that age.
