So I don't know if you have noticed, but there is a lot of hand wringing over the booing of trans activist Jennicet Gutierrez on the Facebook.  A lot of (no doubt young) writers are comparing her actions to that of ACT UP and other queer activist groups.  There has also been a lot of framing this as proof positive that gay men (and women, who are strangely off the hook here regarding this incident)  don't care about trans people and their struggle.

I'm afraid I just have to cry bulls**t.  There is a time and a place for this sort of thing and ACT UP was a group of like-minded people who galvanized for a protest.  Not just one individual who took it upon themselves to make a statement that pisses on a lot of accomplishment.

So what do you think?  Is this a "privileged" viewpoint?

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I think Jennicet does important work and the issue needs to be discussed and known.

However- she was at the back of a crowded room shouting as  the President spoke. I highly doubt ANYONE in that room- President or guest- knew what the hell she was shouting about. I saw the video before the details emerged and had no idea what she was yelling- so how could Obama, or the guests? To everyone, it looked like someone interrupting the President's speech on equality.

She wasn't engaging the President.

She's not an activist. She's a narcissist.
