Fun Home. A lot of broadway reviewers on youtube thought American in Paris is boring.

"P.S. - are we now ruling out Something Rotten! completely?"

I personally think it will boil down to Fun Home v. Something Rotten. But deep down I'm rooting for "The Visit", but I know it's 1 in a million that it would win.

I think this is the first year ever that I wouldn't mind if any of the four nominated musicals won. Each of them was wonderful in it's own way. I hope either "Fun Home" or "The Visit" wins because it will help their ticket sales. "An American in Paris" and "Something Rotten" will do just fine without winning.

Greased Lightning, to be clear, I was just expressing my opinion between the two options presented.  My personal preference would be in this order:

1. The Visit

2. Something Rotten

3. An American in Paris

4. Fun Home

And this thread is discussing Best Musical nominees, specifically Fun Home and An American In Paris. Or am I lost?

Fun Home will add to the literature of great musicals. Fun Home widens the scope of what constitutes a Broadway Musical. Fun Home tells a new kind of story with great skill and nuance.

But at An American in Paris, I had tears streaming down my face, it was so lovely.

It's another year where a very special small work is in competition with a big-hearted spectacle of a show. My brain is all for Fun Home, but my heart is with AAIP.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS for the win.

It's almost "criminal" that these shows must compete against each other, this is an example of why awards are so absurd. But since the awards exist I vote big time for An American in Paris.

"Fun Home

 "

these predictions have AMERICAN IN PARIS winning 7-4. And SOMETHING ROTTEN is the dark horse this year. On the other hand, THE VISIT has 0% chance of winning.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

"Fun Home is the far superior show."

I very much disagree.  I'm not saying American in Paris is superior, but the shows are SO different.  You can say that you enjoyed one far more than the other, but you cannot say that one is far superior to the other.  American in Paris is a directorial masterpiece as far as I'm concerned, and I hope Wheeldon beats out Sam Gold.

Well, between those two: An American in Paris!

Audiences have all sorts of reasons for seeing or not seeing any given show, all of which they're entitled to.  Some may be ill-informed, some may be prejudiced, but it's their money and they can spend it however they want to.

On the other hand, I hope Tony voters are able to set aside any lesbianphobia if it's knocking around in their brains and coming out their mouths as, "It's just not something I'm interested in."

To borrow an earlier catchphrase:  Alison Bechdel, there's never been a musical like her.

Also, I will personally never forgive Craig Lucas if his movie-to-stage adaptation wins.
