I'm just curious, but I saw Hamilton a couple weeks back and really would love Mr. James to sign my Playbill even though he wasn't in the cast at that point. I've heard from a friend that he gets really peeved by people with Playbills with Mr. Groff in the cast, and not him, asking him to sign it. Anyone else have this predicament, or is it just me? Lol. Thank everyone, and I hope to hear from one of you guys soon! :)
I may be wrong, but this sounds really silly to me. First of all, he always seems like a warm-mannered gentleman coming out and signing/taking pictures etc., but how would he even know if the Playbill had Groff in it instead of him? Would he care so much to check every single Hamilton Playbill handed to him and go to the cast list just to get annoyed and not sign the book for that fan? Again I may be wrong, but I highly doubt you would have any problem at all getting it signed.
Thanks for the response! Yeah, that's exactly what I thought! I was told that he DOES check EVERY SINGLE Playbill, and I thought that sounds really ridiculous. And then if he's not in it, he refuses or scribbles on it and hands it back, angry. I'll try this weekend and I'll post my feedback on here just if anyone else out there was in the same situation as me. Again, thanks again! Have a good night! :)
Yeah I mean I don't know, but the whole thing just sounds so crazy because he seems like a very nice guy. Why would he even care I wonder if Jonathon Groff was in it and not him? He decided to leave Hamilton for a leading role in a currently Broadway musical which was his choice, and if it was me I would feel good if a fan told me (even though I'm not an actor or anything) he wanted my signature because he didn't get to see me in it and wanted to at least add him to his signed collection
Also, if he does get angry ask him why in a nice way that he doesn't like to because it seems so odd. I asked him if it is true on Twitter just now so let's see if he responds. When I see Something Rotten, I don't have a Hamilton playbill for him to sign anyway but it just seems so unrealistic that he'd get turned off from THAT when singers sometimes sign innapropprieate pictures of them (only sometimes, but still!) from creepy autograph hunters.
If he gets angry (which doesn't sound like BDJ but everyone has a bad day), I don't think there is a nice way to ask him why. How about being a grownup, and apologize nicely for bothering him and say how much you enjoyed his performance. The man doesn't owe you an explanation. Jeez...
I once accidentally asked him to sign a White Christmas Playbill from the year before the season he was in it. He turned beet red and then he hit me, and it felt like a kiss.
If he is looking, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a reason for it. Maybe he caught wind of something shady on eBay?

wonkit, the only reason why I said to ask him is not to be rude but honestly as to why he would mind. BDJ seems like an extremely nice guy to me and it seems like it would just be weird if he got angry over something so silly as that. If he didn't want to answer I wouldn't mind, but if he would I would be curious as to why. In all honesty, I don't really see much validity to this story and I highly doubt it is true.
My point is that it is rude to ask someone to explain himself when he doesn't owe you an explanation. It may not be your intention to be rude but he doesn't know your intention. You are putting your frankly idle curiosity ahead of being polite to someone who has just spent several hours entertaining you. When you go to someone's house for dinner, do you ask them why they made meatloaf instead of lamb, or used chocolate ice cream instead of strawberry?
Why would you want someone to sign a program in which he's not listed? Would you want Bernadette Peters to sign an A Little Night Music playbill from Catherine Zeta-Jones' run?
