Any suggestions with decent but inexpensive accommodations in NJ with easy access to the transit system and the Port Authority? Can't justify spending a lot of money on a place to sleep for a few hours and would much rather use the money to do extra things in the city. As always thanks in advance for any help and/or advice!!

Does it have to be NJ? Because honestly, you can get great deals in Long Island City, and some of them are within a block of the 7 train. Try Days Inn and Comfort Inn. Sometimes the rates are as low as $87, and they aren't bad if you just need a bed to sleep in.

Check the La Quinta in Fairfield, NJ. Rates should be around $65-$80 a night. Also should have a shuttle to willow brook mall park and ride to port authority, $15 round trip. 30 minute commute without traffic.

I stayed a night last week at The Manhatten at Times Square, picked it via Priceline for 80.00 usd , why stay over the river and and add in a daily train fare when you can get hotels like that in the city!
it was older style, the room was fine bed comfy and right near Times Square
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.

The Super 8 in Weahawken is minutes away from Manhattan. Situated right outside the Jersey opening of the Tunnel, there is a bus that stops in front of it every twenty minutes or so that drop you off on 8th Ave and 42 ST.

The Manhattan Hotel?? Avoid this place even if the room is free. That is unless you want a room with extra filth and bed bugs. The term "fleabag hotel" was created with this place in mind. There are several hotels in Secaucus and Lyndhurst that are one stop away from NYC that are quite nice.
The only review of a show that matters is your own.

Go to Tripadvisor.com and type in New York City Hotels. Put in your dates, and choose price parameters if you like. You will probably find a couple of hotels in Manhattan even that are pretty affordable. With a different search you can find New Jersey hotels. Of course Tripadvisor can be gamed by hotel employees, as any other site, even this one. But you can usually tell which reviews have the ring of truth. The photos posted can be very helpful too.

The Secaucus Red Roof is great. It's anywhere from $80 - $95 a night. I stay there once a year and the bus stop is only about a 5 minute walk. Round trip fare is like $7.60. The only downfall is that the last bus leaves the city at 11pm, so you would have to see a show and get to Port Athority fairly quickly deoending on how long your show is (a 90 minute obviously wouldn't be a problem).

Yes of course he is coming to NYC. But why not go on frommers.com flyertalk lonely planet, milepoint etc .
Why here !!! Going to NYC does not mean Broadway does it. Nor does London mean West End.
why hear why this forum? If I posted a post on los angeles it would be deleted. New Jersey has nothing to do with broadway so why post anything about New Jersey here.

Have you looked at Seafarers International House? It's near Union Square, very cheap and you don't pay tax. If you shop around you could probably find something cheap and decent in Manhattan. Booking.com often has good deals.

Northern NJ native here! I definitely agree with exploring your options to see if you can get a comparable rate in NYC. If not though I highly recommend The Fairfield Inn Marriott in East Rutherford which is literally 10 minutes from The Port Authority! The NJ Transit local 163 & 164 busses both stop right in front of the hotel & I've frequently seen hotel guests use these buses to get to the city. Last buses leaves at 11:40 & 11:50 I believe so plenty of time to see a show and then stagedoor and/or get a snack after. Hope this is helpful!

I'd look at Airbnb for Hoboken/Jersey City too. Ended up doing that a few months ago with friends and saved a bunch of money by taking the bus in/out of Port Authority.

My parents are coming this fall to see me and I begged them to stay in the city, but they insisted on finding a cheap hotel in Jersey. They went with the Comfort Inn in Edgewater, NJ. You can take the 158 bus right outside to Port Authority, probably 15 minutes. The Comfort Inn is also in the same plaza as Trader Joe's. I think it was $80/night.
