With Honeymoon headed for the boneyard, what show do one and all think will be next?
On TDF now, OTT is up for 7 dates. My money is on that one. A shame if it does happen but Broadway is a cutthroat business. Survival of the fittest is the name of the game
Well since Passover is coming, you're going to see more shows on TDF. I agree that On the Town hasn't been doing stellar business, but unless someone else wants that theater, what would the logic be in closing before the Tony noms come out?
I think the next few weeks with the openings coming up will determine who's in and who's not.
@falling-The logic would be that you are tired of writing checks for the shortfall every week. The illogic is that if you did it through the winter, you might as well keep going, on the rather perverse theory that a Tony nom (or award) will somehow reverse the show's fortunes.
@roxy-I think Gigi may be next. OTT has a bottomless pit as well as a decent shot at some awards, which isa dangerou combination. Gigi has nothing.
Be careful which show(s) you mention, folks. Our resident idiot will then use what you say to bitterly complain in 15 different threads about how this board targets a show and roots for its closure.... and how unfair and terrible that is... and how that's why he's given up on Broadway... and why he will be seeing far fewer shows... and how somehow he will survive... oh, and Brantley sucks.
Oh I get it. It is fair game to go after any show other than one you like. Those are off limits. I do not see you attacking those wondering what is next at a theater before the current show even makes opening night.
SH*T happens sweets. You can dish it out but cannot take it. I no longer care when a show closes. If I see it fine. If not, that's life.
Admittedly I don't follow this board constantly but wasn't Roxy the one complaining about people on here rooting for shows to close, then he starts a thread like this? Also I'm not sure why Roxy makes such a point of posting on here so much if he really isn't that bothered by theatre any more.
I don't see many people rooting for shows to close despite what some people here say , what I do see is people who either work in the industry, or have followed the theatre business for a while, making educated guesses on the state of some shows. I never 'want' a show to close (and I think the same can be said for majority on here), but common sense and logic makes it quite easy to determine which shows are struggling and clinging on for dear life. And when you follow any business for long enough patterns emerge and you get a sense of what will take off, and what won't. Yes sometimes you are proved wrong, but more often than not the gut feelings are proved right
Fisherman Bob and Princeton Returns - that is the same thought I had when I saw Roxy started this thread. The biggest bitcher about the very thing he's posting about. And then he posts ad nauseum how he doesn't care and has given up on theater. And he's so put upon. ugh.
I am not rooting for it to close. I am merely asking people what show they think maybe next. Big difference.. I gave my opinion and am asking others if they agree or not and to give their opinion. Nothing more and nothing less.
You actively complain about people being negative and wondering about shows closing , then you post a thread that is not only negative and about shows closing but its phrased in a such snark manner. It's pretty hypocritical
This business is so unpredictable. If you were to ask people about Honeymoon in Vegas before it opened, I think most people would have guessed it would have been a hit. As far as what shows are closing next, I think that will really be determined within the next few weeks. On The Town, however, even if it wins Best Revival, I still can't really see it becoming a hit in the house. Plus, it is an outdated show. I thought it was pretty boring, and the actors could have done a lot more with the material.
I'm not sure how many would have said it would have been a hit, I certainly wouldn't have. The only surprise being it's held on longer than I expected.
The same thing happens in London, all of the recent flops many people saw coming a long way off
Pinto, what about that do you find hilarious? None of us know whether a show is likely to close or not, but some of us base our analysis on something unrelated to what we hope. It is entirely reasonable for a person to say they do not hope for ANY show to close, but we also know that many shows DO close (and Broadway would be a pretty sad place if every show just ran forever, without an audience, without a positive cash flow and without opening up theatres to new projects. Usually, as in the case of Side Show, the decision to close is ultimately the result of the cooler head of a landlord forcing the issue. Other times, when there is no opportunity costto the landlord, a show may be allowed to fester despite all logic. In those cases, it is not hilarious for folks to prognosticate based on objective factors as to whether it will close or not. That prognostication does not always prove to be correct, because there are sometimes lunatics with their hand on the tiller of a show. What I don't understand is why someone would want to align themselves with lunatics. I wish I could say that's hilarious, but it is really just disconcerting.
