Has anyone seen American Sniper? I thought it was such an odd movie for Groff to be in.

Why is it odd for an actor to take a role in a widely released movie with a well-known director, and an A-list lead? And, obviously he wouldn't know it at the time, but a film up for Best Picture.
Now, if you want to discuss why he's in Looking, then we can talk...

Just such a small role I guess, he looked messed up in the eyes, which is what that character was meant to convey, so I guess he did it well, he didn't look himself, so well done.

I wouldn't necessarily call it an odd choice. He IS an actor for God's sake. But as I've said elsewhere on the board, his brief performance in the film did make me laugh out loud in an otherwise quiet theatre. And I wasn't the only one laughing.
His character just gave off this heavy "I wanna do you, right here, right now" vibe while talking to Chris Kyle in the auto body shop. I think Mr. Eastwood put that little kid in the scene specifically to draw off the heat between those two homos!
