I know that the initial investment for commercial Broadway musicals can range from a few million to $65+million (although Spider-man is an anomaly), with most modest musicals start at about $5 million and bigger musicals can be $15-20 million. (These numbers may be wrong, but this is what I remember reading.) How about commercial off-Broadway? I'm thinking something like Heathers or Avenue Q at New World Stages (which I'm assuming is different since it transferred from a Broadway production). Are these numbers ever released? I'm just curious. Thanks!

Most Broadway musicals are currently avging btwn 8-12 million
BTW, plays are avg now 4-6 mill
Commercial off-bway in "better" theatres (e.g. New World) are appxly $1.5-$2.5 mil. Otherwise assume .5-$1 mil

What plays cost 4-6 million? The recent revival of Raisin in the Sun with a huge star cost 2.6 million. The most expensive play recently that I could find was All The Way, which was in a large theatre with a pretty big star and also a new play and that was 3.9 million. I would say 2-4 million for Broadway plays, and usually 1-3 million for off-broadway musicals.
