Variety tweeted a link that Once was closing and then deleted it. I googled it and the headline from Variety comes up but when I click on it it states that the page is not found...
Here's what comes up on google:
"Broadway Musical 'Once' Closing in January 2015 | Variety variety.com/.../broadway-once-close-january-2015-1201324042/ Variety 7 hours ago - With “Once” having just opened in Melbourne and gearing up for stagings in Seoul, Toronto and cities in Japan, the decision to close the ..."
Telecharge is selling tickets through June 21, 2015. That doesn't mean it won't close before then, but it is interesting that the article in Variety has been removed.
I'm surprised it has lasted on Broadway this long. I enjoyed it, but wouldn't have bet on the longevity.
Likely the press release is for tomorrow and the date escaped someone's notice.
No one here will be surprised when the do announce.
They had a nice run, made some money and made a lot of people happy - me included.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Given the recent grosses, its not a surprise but it's a great run and I'm sure it'll have a good life touring and internationally although I do wonder whether the London production will follow since they've had to stunt casting.
I wonder if King Charles III might be going to the Jacobs? Personally I think they should wait until later next year since there are so many new plays opening in the Spring.
I wouldn't be surprised if this were true. If anything, I'll be proud that one of my all-time favorite shows played itself a fantastic near-three-year run and never sold its soul to stunt casting. I went back over the summer and was pleased to see nearly half the original company still playing in the ensemble; they really are the heart of the show for me. And Paul Nolan made a wonderful Guy, very different from Steve Kazee but equally as compelling and honoring of the show's beautiful spirit.
For one who rarely sees shows multiple times, ONCE utterly fulfilled me each of the three times I saw it, and I'm so glad to have gone back again and again.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
jnb9872 - didn't Arthur Darvill play Guy? I saw him in London and he was quite good - but he played Rory on Doctor Who for 3 years - and at least in London, played up that he was in the show for a limited time. So, there was some sort of stunt casting - albeit it was not a Jonas Brother.
I wouldn't call Arthur Darvill stunt casting. He basically started in the show unannounced and it wasn't like they based their entire marketing campaign around him.
A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.
What a truly great run for a show if its nature. Although there were a lot of empty seats in the audience tonight, many people were saying how much they enjoyed it afterwards.
LOVED this show. Seen it twice & I hope to see it again before it closes. A great run for such a small snow.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
If you've never seen Once I highly recommend it. I saw it several times at NYTW, twice on Broadway with the OBC and Arthur Darvill and also on tour. I plan to go to the last performance.
It's going to have a lot of engagements abroad. I'm happy for its success. There's nothing else like it on Broadway, really. It's amazing it succeeded in a market that makes its money more on spectacle and big name stars.
