I don't know much about the show, but I'm listening to clips from the recording and I'm really impressed about how much Audra is really getting into the character/person - I can barely recognise her singing or speaking voice.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I was there today and it was absolutely magical! This was my first time seeing it and it was undoubtedly the most brilliant performance I have ever witnessed! Audra really gave it her all and was choking back tears towards the end, the crowd gave her a solid 5 minute standing O even after she had left the stage! The transformation she goes through is mind blowing, between the last scene when the lights go down and when they come up for the bows you could literally see the difference between Billie and Audra! I had chills from the moment she walked on and I still have them now. Without a doubt the most memorable experience I have ever had!
I will never forget her performance. Sitting less than 5 feet away from her was indescribable. I am so glad I got to share this special moment with my mother.
Edit: Autocorrect, though you probably could have figured out which word I meant based on context clues...
