You all need to hear this CD. I've enjoyed David Campbell since his NYC cabaret days in the mid-90's, and his CD's "Yesterday is Now" and "Taking the Wheel" have been in constant rotation on my playlists. His Swing tributes, Broadway, and 80's music over the past few years have been enjoyable at best, but was missing much of the emotion and uniqueness that made his first two recordings so special. His new CD re-teams his voice with John Bucchino...... and it is simply stellar! Someone please bring this guy back to NY and Broadway soon.......
The8re Phan, if you're a fan of David's 'Taking the Wheel' CD, you might like to know that a cabaret colleague of his, Tom Andersen, is coming back to the N.Y. stage. Back in 1996, David went to see Tom sing at the Algonquin and was bowled over. He asked Tom for his permission to record his AIDS song 'Yard Sale' (which Tom wrote) and also wound up 'borrowing' Tom's version of 'Storybook' (from 'The Scarlet Pimpernel'), and that's how both ended up on David's 'Taking the Wheel' CD. ... Anyway, Tom's doing his first solo act in nearly a decade: Saturdays, Aug. 2, 9 and 16 at 7 p.m. at Don't Tell Mama, 343 W. 46th St., NYC. He'll sing Sondheim, Rodgers & Hammerstein and his original tunes.
David Campbell and John Bucchino just finished a cabaret tour of major Australian cities to promote the new album. David's voice was, as always, astonishingly good. Maybe he will return to NYC with the show at some point in the future?
We all have a special theatrical moment that stands out for one reason or another. One of mine was seeing Barbara Cook conducting a Master Class and David Campbell sang--she said--'there is nothing I can teach you'.
