"So I have some producer contacts in the NY Broadway theater community, and last night I was told that Faye Dunnaway recently lost the rights she held to do the Tony award winning play "Master Class", and Barbra privately contacted librettist Terrance McNally and acquired the rights for herself to direct and star in it. It's a hush-hush deal, but the producer friend I know who works with McNally confirmed it's done deal."
Thoughts? What happened to Dunaway's almost completed film...
Only problem with this rumor... didn't Dunaway actually film it, and it's all on a shelf? I mean, it's not the first time that's happened to a picture, but still, no matter how long it's taking for her to get her **** together, doesn't mean they'll give the rights to someone else right off the bat.
I will say this is a better career-ending vehicle for Streisand than Gypsy if it's true. (And that, even if it sounds like dog doo, Madonna as Rose and Gaga as Louise is far more marketable.)
It's either going to be a shockingly decent performance made brilliant by sheer will and the surmounting of impossible odds or an expectedly godawful performance that is sure to be a camp classic.
I agree with the above statement that MASTER CLASS is a MUCH better vehicle for her at this point in her career than GYPSY.
"Oh look at the time, three more intelligent plays just closed and THE ADDAMS FAMILY made another million dollars" -Jackie Hoffman, Broadway.com Audience Awards
I can't speak as to the truth in the Streisand rumors, but as to the question of whether Dunaway's film version is in postproduction or not, I can with strong certainty assure you that it is not. Word is that perhaps only as little as one third of filming has been completed under Dunaway's guidance, and she is had lawsuits involving her editor and photographers on the project, so it's entirely possible that the footage that has been filmed will not even be usable. I admire Dunaway's tenacity in trying to get the film made, but, much like Streisand's fruitless years of endeavor on The Normal Heart, it's now likely time to let another artist have a shot at bringing the story to film. Ironic, if in this instance, it does turn out indeed to be Streisand who ultimately gets it made.
Streisand and Dunaway have now both outlived Callas by 20 or so years (Callas was a couple of months short of her 54th birthday at the time of her death). If Dunaway's film is never completed and the rights do end up being bought by somebody else I'd much rather see somebody a bit more age appropriate on screen as Callas.
Or, to paraphrase Forbidden Broadway slightly, "A Maria Callas from Brooklyn? I ask you!"
Sorry to deviate from the topic at hand but .......Reeeeally?!?! Madonna as Rose? Wasn't butchering Eva Peron enough? Or shall we just let her work her way through the musical theater cannon and disgrace Rose, Desiree Armfeldt, Reno Sweeney, and Anna Leonowens as well?

Be careful not to hurt your hands while you're clutching those pearls so tightly.

"Butchered" it all the way to a Golden Globe Award.
As much as I stan for Madonna, I wouldn't want to see her as Mama Rose. That's certainly not the role for her. Cackling internally about Madonna + Gaga doing a show together though. The audience would be so busy warring with itself that no one would WATCH the show.
Sorry, back to the topic. Updated On: 5/30/14 at 09:32 AM

I'm with Jordan. It's marketing, honey. With AutoTune and lots of corpses, we could make you a star, too.

There was a time a few years ago when Faye was tweeting daily updates about Master Class being "almost ready". I saw her do it on stage in Hollywood about 20 years ago. She was good, but it wasn't the kind of performance that would translate to the screen.
