Hey, guys! Thanks to everyone who voted for me in the NewYork.com contest; I won a trip to NYC for me and a guest and tickets to the Tony Awards rehearsal! We are so excited! I was there last summer and saw (among other things) Pippin and Matilda and my friend has never been before so this is going to be an AMAZING first experience for her.
I need some suggestions/tips for those of you who are more local and/or have been to a Tony rehearsal before. KathyNYC2 has given me an awesome list of food and restaurant ideas and she suggested I open it up for more options. Price range is anything from $-$$, but somewhere in the middle, too.
I don't know if we have an itinerary/schedule yet besides a dinner they're paying for us and the Tony rehearsal, but we want to try to fit in a couple of shows. We have a chance to see Pippin (for free) so we are definitely doing that if it still pulls through and we would both love to see If/Then. IF there are any discount codes or special offers (for Friday or Saturday), THEN please let us know. lol. If there are any other show suggestions we'll take suggestions, too. If for whatever reason we can't see If/Then, I'd love to see either Les Mis, Aladdin, or Gentleman's Guide To Love & Murder if she's up to it.
Since our time is so limited there, we decided that can wait on the sightseeing/touristy stuff, but if there is anything two theatre majors should definitely see then we're all ears! I'd love to go to the theatre and drama book shops (including Samuel French to pick up copies of our school's scripts for next season), the Tony pop-up shop, and anything else in the Times Square area which is where we're staying. A lot of cast albums I am wanting will be released by the time I get there (If/Then, Violet, Rocky, Aladdin, etc.) and if they are being sold in the theatre would I still be able to go in and purchase them even if I can't see the show? If not, where is the best place to buy them at a reasonable price?
And again, please share your experiences or comments if any of you have been to a Tony rehearsal before!
Thanks so much again to those of you have voted and to those who'll provide suggestions and commentary! THANKS!!
Btw, this is probably one of the things you might get to see during the TONY rehearsals. The dress rehearsal for one of Hugh's tap dance numbers, uploaded by BWW --
I believe the Tonys are actually shown on a big screen in Times Square. So you could sit outside during them, unless you have more interesting plans for the actual show. The viewing party at 54 Below is sold out, unfortunately.
Actually, 54 Below is a good place in general. I saw Matthew Morrison there last summer. I have no idea who is performing when you are in town, but it's worth checking out. I know you can get discounts to some shows there on Goldstar.com. You do have a $25 food and beverage charge during shows as well. You also could just reserve a spot for pre-theater dinner. It can be a little pricy, but it is really worth it, if you can afford it or feel like splurging a tiny bit.

I hope the food suggestions included John's Pizzeria! Enjoy your trip, and congratulations on winning! That is awesome. Please report back on your experiences once you're home, I'd love to read about it!
I'll probably still check it out. I'd like to have something that says Tony Awards on it just because it's the big part of the trip. And we're only a couple of blocks away. Thanks, brdway411!
Since you two are theater majors, you should go check out the performing arts library at Lincoln Center. It's part of the NYPL so anyone can go in and take a look around. Lincoln Center in general is a really cool place, I like to just go there and sit and read a book sometimes on a nice day. Also if you have some time and it's nice out, go take a walk on the High Line, it's gorgeous.
While you are on the High Line, get off at Chelsea Market and have lunch at Chelsea Thai. Also, Check out Strand Book Store right down the street from Union Square.
